A painting by Donald Hall, one of the more famous American students of Beppe Assenza. It is easier for us to see the unusual when we step into a space that is beyond our everyday life. We travel and we expect the world to reveal new and amazing things to us. But there are things at home that are just as fascinating. The Bible has many amazing quotes in it that express universal truths. One of these is: a prophet has no honor in his own country. I feel like this quote speaks not just about how we are perceived by those who know us well. That they do not see our best qualities. But also to the fact that we may overlook the geniuses on our doorstep. Not take seriously the beauty around us. Not remember that America has anthroposophical art too. Remember to look around you with reverence. At this time of the year, the shapes of the different varieties of trees are there silhouetted against the sky in all their variance. And perhaps we could exercise this verse in our upcoming meetings with family and friends: The healthy social life is found When in the mirror of each human soul the whole community has its reflection, And when, in the community, The virtue of each one is living. -Rudolf Steiner I think perhaps the key to this for me, is to remember to call up the virtues that I am grateful for in those I love, so that that image of them is there for me to interact with.
